Jump 2 postponed ...
Posted by
DC at 13:23

Don't take MY word for it but this ain't a Photoshop Image. It's for REAL! From this angle it looks like Sebastien jumping over the Millennium Stadium during one of the scenes shot on the Latest JUMP edition.

The date of the release has now been moved till early January. What can only be described as nerve wrecking, nail biting, seat ripping tension that is quickly building. I cannot wait to see the end results knowing that South Africa might have some footage included in the film. I'll keep you all informed ... ;-)

Sunday Tuks Jam 2 write-up (VIDEO included)

(Write-up done by X-Ray. Video completed by Specs)

"Right Click", then choose "Save As..." TUKS JAM 2

Well X-RaY, Viv and Steph arrived late to find Specs,Acid Jazz, DnK, Heidi jamming in front of the library. They all looked tired and almost spent by the time we got there. Its probably a good idea to arrive for jams on time as any later and the guys starting out on time are physically finished.

Specs decided to show us an area near the top of the campus that he found to be fun. We walked up to look at the area which provided the footage of the Gap Jump (aka "Squirrel leap") onto the drain pipe shown in the film clip associated with this write-up. After getting that footage I went to look at a wall with grass underneath it to practice landing and rolls. A little way away from the initial area we found a nice enclosed court yard with stairs and railings on top of a flat roof. Specs pulled a monkey from the top railing to a small slab of concrete below at wall height. Scary but there is not much that can scare Specs. Next he wanted to dash the obstacle but decided that it was too scary. (So there are some things that scare Specs after all) At least he is human.

Steph is 7 and has been going to jams with me for a while now. Not that I expect a 7 year old to have the maturity to be doing hardcore PK but she is interested and willing to try some of the vaults and movements preferring to jump onto low walls run them and jump off as well as cartwheels and other gymnastic movements. She did a nice vault over a small bicycle railing that is just a sign of what will come if she keeps doing PK with us. Well done Steph. (Ed - Look out for the very last piece of footage to find Steph doing her vault)

After a hour of messing around at Tukks I was certainly tired and we decided to call it a day. One bad landing from height resulted in a slightly pulled neck and DnK also had a knock on his elbow. All in all a very nice day out just arriving late resulted in a limited time to jam with the other traceurs.

(Ed- I like the video. Although it's small, it deifinitely shows what you guys got up to during the day)

Wed Night Jam at 4 ways 17/11/2004

(By X-Ray)

Expecting a small turn out again I arrived to find Specs in town. :-D The standard “Hello” to the security contingent to give notice that we had arrived and would be doing our thing. Then to the obligatory warm up.

Some new peeps arrived to give PK a try. The list goes as follows Specs, X-RaY, Zeorin, Rab, Marina, Jessica, newbies: Nichola and friend (sorry name escapes me). With people arriving in stages its now become a personal responsibility to ensure that each traceur is attending to their own warm up exercises. We started with some slow warm-up runs and hit the standard obstacles for technique practice.

The area presents some interesting and new scenarios each time. Specs pulled some big monkeys from the top parking railing to the bottom, then some vaults to precision stops on top of pole bollards. The rest of the gang were up to the regular "get the newbies going" and practice vaults and runs. There were people moving all over the place at this point and the landscape filling up with moving bodies.

The rooftops at The Game Center are no longer safe as Specs treated the group to a climb up the wall and then disappeared onto the roof of the building. (Ed - OUCH) Don’t forget to make sure a safe way down has been located Specs. There should always be a way down but you never know. :-p

After a good session at Game we decided to go and have a look at Pineslopes Shopping Center. This place has lots of interesting drops and some grass for rolls, which is absent at Game. Nice wall runs and some railings. I dont think the variety is as good as Game but Pinslopes has other features. After a good hour of investigation we then went back to Fourways Mall and over to the Absa building. Some precision running a vaulting of the stairwell and internal walls of the underground parking were fun. Rab had a near miss but managed to hang on, this was generated by the low roof that makes you feel like you are going to bump your head. Its amazing how a piece of off putting structure can throw techniques that you can normally do with ease. The mental aspect of PK is certainly difficult to control in these situations. Thoroughly tired mentally drained we called it a night at 10:00, and returned home to wait for the weekend action. Sorry peeps for the late write up.

(Ed- X-Ray, nice write-up, sounds like fun all round. I hope The new peeps got to actually enjoy some of the PK. Specs, did that roof cave in or what?)

A Night Jam and an Airborn Spectator
Posted by
DC at 11:06

What do you get when you throw a Writer, a Graphic Designer, a Boxer, a Book Store Manager, a Fire-dancer (phyro-technician), some of them students, and some of them not, and a Reggae-enthusiast together?  And o yes, some innocent onlookers that have no idea what is about to happen to their (most probably) dreary lives…

On Wednesday evening, 10 November 2004, Angelo, Conrad, Jan-Hendrik, Sean, and our official “high” spectator and myself came together for Potchefstroom’s first official night-jam.  Our get-together spot was the Potch University’s student centre.

So at round-about 18:45 I met with our newbie Jan-Hendrik.  We did some stretches, and then I went through some basic techniques with him.  By 19:00 the rest of the dudes arrived.  Everyone quickly started to stampede the benches that are all over.  We warmed up with precisions jumps from the back-rests and arm-rests of the benches.  This asked for quite thrilling manoeuvrability, seeing that the benches are mostly perpendicular or angled with each other.   So to land the precision jump one has to turn in midair.  Lot’s of fun!

Various vaults were attempted over the benches.  Some more successful than others.  Palm spins were slightly less popular, but still added for some exciting moments.

The amphitheatre proved itself an irresistible challenge.  Wall runs was the first feat.  Angelo had a very nice run, that included a wall-run into a cat-leap into an underbar vault – through the amphitheatre’s railing. The latter caused for some interesting aping, but it seemed that Angelo stayed the king-of-the-underbar.

The amphi’s railing lend itself to great turning vaults, spider-manish hanging and great depth jumps.

I did some PK-rolls to the distress of some of the gang – seeing that it was on concrete and also played about at a nearby stairway.

After about an hour we moved to another spot.  At the back of the Administration Building there are steps leading up to a patio.  The steps are neighboured with a ramp margined with two walls that makes for lovely precisions and vaults.  By now most was exhausted, but Conrad and myself brought some dynamism to the otherwise tedious architecture, while Angelo played with his new camera.  Hopefully we’ll get some photo’s.  Sean, who had a very hard afternoon, training for an upcoming boxing match, pushed himself an extra bit and tried some of the precisions.

On the side, our “high” spectator stood close by and proved that you needn’t be airborne to “feel” airborne.  ;-)

Angelo officially closed the jam by attacking a spiralling stairwell, and climbed it out from the “wrong side” up.

After the jam most of us went for something to gulp and chow at the “Draak”, a pub-and-grill on campus.

So to answer the starting question of this write-up…uhm…I guess you get a typical PK-Jam in Potch.

God-bless,

Prophet.

(Editor-Prophet looks like you guys had some fun. Look forward to the videos being put up and linked to this write-up .... cause I've already seen'em)

Competition Time
Posted by
DC at 13:16

There’s no turning back now. It’s only 38 days till Christmas 2004. So, with this in mind we here at www.parkour.co.za have a little something for you to get your grubby paws on to treat yourself this festive season. But don’t think for ONE minute you’re going to get this all for nothing! No sir! We have a competition for you to try your luck, and skills, on first.

Search for the holy …um… NAME?
The PKSA Crew, which will be our showcase group of Traceurs (aka Free Runners) in South Africa, need a name. What we are looking for is a name that has reference to both the Parkour discipline and Africa. You must include what the name means and its origin (If its in a language other than English). Please try to refrain from using words like CLAN, KREW and TEAM, as these have already been used abundantly in the Parkour world. However, the final decision is yours.

What’s the prize?
Well, Urban Freeflow has sponsored some of the trendiest PK T-Shirts for the winner. That’s a potential prize worth a whopping £60!! To view these items, you can log onto www.urbanfreeflow.com/urbanfreeflow/UFGear.htm where you will find “The Way”, “E3” & “Roadsign” T’s being displayed. Go on, have a look and get the creative brainwaves pumping, then imagine yourself winning these highly sought after items. (HUGE thanks goes out to EZ for sorting this out for us)

All entries and queries must be submitted to pk.southafrica@gmail.com with the subject “Moniker Comp”. Please note that by entering information into the competition, you are handing over the rights of that name to www.Parkour.co.za, who will then own the name and may use it as and when they see fit. Competition closes on Friday 10 December 2004 and is valid for South African residents only. Along with your proposed name, also submit your name, telephone number, postal address and your shirt size. Good Luck!

If you do not win this time .... don't worry, we have another competition coming soon which will be worth watching out for. Trust me! It's along the lines of the link i placed on the site yesterday... ;-)

Jump UK
With the filming all wrapped up and the production team kicking into top gear to put all the footage in some sort of exciting sequence, Jump UK is set to be completed before the end of the year (Rumours are, and they are always correct, that this film has 20 times more action than Jump London, AND it's all in English. haha) Mike Christie, the director, has indicated that he is hoping to be able to host a J:UK Premiere Event where people from the Parkour community will have a chance to watch the first screening of the movie a week before it’s release onto Channel4. This is all set to take place on the 21 December 2004 in London, with it then being aired on national UK television on the 29 Dec. (It's not 100% confirmed yet, so hold on to your popcorn for the moment)

With the South African guys pulling out all the stops, they have managed to send in Parkour footage, which has a chance to be placed into the final cut of Jump UK. The idea was to show how fast Parkour has spread all over the world, and get each country to send in footage. Although nothing is finalised yet, we are hoping for the best and look forward to seeing the results, and maybe .. just maybe you will soon be seeing the likes of X-RaY, Syndicate, Specs, DnK, DIESEL_PUMA, Acid Jazz and Sonic in the film. A big thanks goes out to Nico Gray for his time and effort in the filming of the SA footage.

Parkour.co.za Website
A very B.i.G. shout out goes to our Webmaster, Neil “B.i.G.” Craig, for the work being done on the website back-end systems. With the new feature added, it certainly helps us streamline our process on the database. Not to mention the fact that the website has been sped up as well since he incorporated a few changes behind the scenes.

We are closing in on another few thousand visits for the month to the site, a trend that has been in place for the last 3 months since our exposure in the Sunday Times newspaper. Let's hope we can start getting as many at the jams! :-D

Although we try our best to make sure that the website is running smoothly and has valid content, we understand that not everyone’s needs are catered for all the time. So should you feel you have any valid suggestions or requests, please feel free to let us know.

Events
We still have not got information from everybody with regards to where they are based. This makes it difficult for us to team you up with anyone in your area. If you want to be added on, then send us an e-mail to pk.southafrica@gmail.com with your Name, City, Suburb and Contact Number. These all get added to the South African Database and then we know who to contact should a parkour jam be near your area that we know of. So we can team you up.

Check the website for regular events. There's at least one every weekend, and also one every Wednesday evening.

UNION BUILDINGS JAM
Posted by
DC at 15:16

(compiled by Diesel_Puma)

The Jam was the last filming and shooting Jam for potential footage to be added to the Jump UK Film, and was held at the Union Buildings. We decided Union Buildings was a great place since it was where the very first Jam took place with DC introducing the sport into South Africa, and also it was very "South African" ... so the filming would suit the criteria.

The Jam started out at the Police Memorial Am-Phi Theatre where we started filming... The team started with a quick Traceur Run, 4 Traceurs of X-Ray, Specs, Syndicate and ???(A friend of Specs). Coming on the right doing vaults and jumps of variety and Niko panning the camera to the right with Sonic doing a monkey vault to pole turn and DnK and Diesel_Puma doing gap jumps into PK rolls. The filming was highly successful and we filmed a second shot of the 7 Traceurs doing monkey, reverse, split frozen reverse vaults, a hand flip and Specs being special doing a forward leg split summersault! The filming of that was also great!

We moved on to the back of the Am-phi theatre with DnK doing a HUGE jump from the top to PK roll. Diesel_Puma then thought he was clever and "ATTEMPTED" to do a wall run and stuck his foot into a sprinkler hole (famous words - "I didn't see it!!!") and ended up twisting his ankle! (OUCH) So sadly, that was the end of his day! :\

The other Traceurs then did some impressive wall runs up the curve wall! Sonic, Specs and DnK then did a trio move where Sonic and Specs jumped over a fight of stairs into PK roll and DnK wall running on the side wall... Specs then wall ran and Sonic did a vertical palm spin to finish the shot! Sonic also did a HUGE jump over the steps with Niko and Dino filming at the bottom (No, he didn't land on them!) X-Ray also got an AWESOME shot! DnK then did the best shot of the day just jumping crazily past Niko's camera and "BLAH!!!!!!!" like a PARKOUR GROUPIE of note!

We moved to a new area next to the pretty flowers and rose bushes where stories were told about the GREAT jumps a one "Dane Grant" did off high places... Everybody just couldn't help themselves admiring "OOOOOOOOOOING and AHHHHHHHHHHHHING"!!! (editor - yeah right, get a room you guys. haha)

Specs did an Awesome King Kong Vault and X-Ray did some wall runs which took a WHOLE chunk out of the wall! :) DnK and Specs did some amazing cat to cats over a flight of stairs which Specs wore away a whole place on the wall but Lekker shots where taken!

Sonic did a vertical palm spin of a light post and then Specs formally closed of the Jam doing a HUGE forward Split Somersault and a HUGE Back flip off a HUGE and HIGH place!!! The gymnastics side then took over and Specs incorporated it into Urban Gymnastics and did a vault of his legs going round in 2 circles!

The Jam was mind-pumping and the adrenaline was rushing!!! Thanks to all the people who came to watch!!!!!!! :) Look forward to the film and shots!

(eds notes: Sounds like it was something that needed to be captured on film .... oh wait ... it WAS. :-D Cannot wait to see it. DnK, your foot needs some rest and take it easy there. Rest Ice Compression Elevation. So the jams in SA have almost done a full circle. Starting out at the Union Buildings beginning of this year, and now culminating in a showdown with brand new faces and talent. Well done to everyone who made it happen. Look forward to meeting you guys..)

A letter to all the girls out there!
Posted by
DC at 11:47

Hi, my name is Paka.

I'm a female traceur, I'm quite a newbie at this whole jumping-off-stuff-and
breaking-yourself thing! I would just like to send out a word of encouragement to all da gals out there who are interested in joining but don't have da "balls" to come to jams. Yes, PK is often seen as a male dominated sport with lotsa testosterone and sweat but I can promise you that men cry jut as hard when they hit that floor, and boy do they hit it hard sometimes....! Anyways enough about the guys, its bout us "chicks" now.

I have been to about only 4 jams so far, I suck, but I've learned 2 moves at least in 4 sessions and that's not bad 4 someone like me. So you see u don't have to be a super athlete (Specs....AHEM :-) ) all u need is enthusiasm and nothing better to do on a Wednesday night. I understand it can be scary stepping out into the big, bad world and meeting up with strangers from the Internet, but once u get to know everyone who does this PK thing u realise it's not so damn freaky and that they wont make u into soap or anything like that. So come on girls I'm sick of being da only one perved on by all da guys, please help me: save my dignity and join!!

Lotsa luving bananas...
Paka

(Editor: I would like to add that women have taken to Parkour is a big way over here in the UK. South Africa has already some famous women doing PK. Soopamom, Angelina-Jolie, Carrot and now Paka. Go get 'em girls....)

OLD FORT AND WITS JAM
Posted by
DC at 11:11

Write-up by DIESEL_PUMA

The day began with some awesome Parkour SA media exposure. X-Ray, Specs and Syndicate did a radio interview with SAFM which blew Parkour in SA sky high!

The Team then met up at the Old Fort to Jam but we were told that we weren't allowed to do anything just yet so... Like true Traceurs we did what we could of the area... and moved on down to the "Courtyard of Painted Cows" and the team did some warming up and vaults. The Jam was also supposed to get some good video footage for the JumpUK movie but the Take5 team didn't show so we were left on our own to do the best we could! We had some mean digital equipment ourselves to get some good shots so PARKOUR prevailed at the end of the day!

Specs and Diesel attempted to do a Duo Wall Run but were unsuccessful. We continued down to the car park, where Syndicate spotted a very interesting statue of a "German Dominatrix"... we then met up with some awesome precision jumping and running material! The team got some excellent "AFRICA" shots and some decent precision jumps. Diesel and Specs then attempted to do a HUGE duo precision jump and great shots were taken!!! At the car park the team decided to move onto Wits but the Traceurs had to get some finishing shots... Specs moved his car into a prominent position to do a Monkey Vault! Another Duo shot was taken with Diesel going over the front of the car with Specs doing a Monkey Vault over the roof! We then got going to find what Wits had to offer...

At Wits we started on a grass area practicing our PK rolls. Specs attempted to do a HUGE wall run but it was just too high unfortunately ... DnK then did a few Vertical Palm Spins (YAH!!!!!!!!!!!!) The team moved on to a new area which was bubbling with variety! A lot of vaults were done with Specs doing a HUGE DASH VAULT! Specs then attempted to do a MASSIVE MONKEY TO PRECISION... the 1st time he under jumped... the 2nd time HE LANDED IT PERFECTLY!!!... the 3rd time he took a great and painful fall : \  We had some amazed bystanders which were wide eyed and had jaws hanging to the ground! DnK then did a HUGE AND HIGH JUMP to precision, the JUMP was about 1 story high and he landed it slick as ever a couple of times! Specs and DnK did some decent cat to cats and Specs did a wall run to Cat doubling with Diesel to a precision jump overhead! Specs also pulled a solid handstand freeze a story high! The team moved higher up where DnK, Specs and Diesel did some BIG jumps to cats! X-Ray went with some traceurs to do wall runs and then the energy levels were depleted. Everyone rested with Diesel doing a last curve wall run for the camera... The team then went to rest in a true Parkourist spirit; they went to chill by a pub near X-Rays house!

It was a brilliant Jam and I’m sure everybody accomplished and learnt a lot! Big thanks to all the TRACUERS for coming and a very very BIG THANKS to the camera men for taking awesome shots! We look forward to the photos and videos which will be posted up on the site soon...

(Editor's comments: Very nice. Sounds like some fun was had all round. I hope the footage came out okay. Specs, hows the back after that Monkey to Precision?)
